Tendinitis and Bursitis Treatments in New Jersey
Fellowship-Trained Rheumatologists Providing Specialized Care to Patients Across South & Central Jersey & Philadelphia
Tendinitis and bursitis are soft-tissue conditions that can develop from everyday activity, not just intense athletic training. Both cause pain, swelling, and reduced mobility, but they involve different structures and respond to different treatments. Getting a correct diagnosis and professional treatment is essential to recovery.
Arthritis, Rheumatic & Bone Disease Associates is an independent rheumatology practice established in 1974, treating tendinitis and bursitis among other rheumatoid conditions and diseases. Every physician on our team has completed fellowship training in rheumatology and is board-certified or board-eligible. We focus exclusively on musculoskeletal and inflammatory conditions, so your evaluation is handled by a rheumatology physician from the first visit, not a general practitioner who sees these cases only occasionally.
If you’re dealing with persistent joint or soft-tissue pain, don’t wait it out. Call Arthritis, Rheumatic & Bone Disease Associates today at (856) 424-5005 to schedule an evaluation and see if you need tendinitis or bursitis care!
Different Structures, Different Treatment
Tendinitis is inflammation of the tendons, the structures that connect muscles to bones. It most often results from repetitive motion or overuse, a pattern that develops gradually through sports, physical labor, or repeated tasks like typing or painting. Over time, accumulated stress can cause tendons to break down, leading to pain that worsens with activity.
Bursitis pain, on the other hand, comes from an inflamed bursa sac, one of the small, fluid-filled cushions near joints that reduce friction between bones, tendons, and muscles. Like tendinitis, bursitis can stem from overuse. Unlike tendinitis, it can also be triggered by systemic conditions, including gout and pseudogout, rheumatoid arthritis, and kidney disease. That broader set of causes makes an accurate diagnosis especially important.
Neither condition is arthritis. They affect the soft tissue around joints, not the joints themselves. It’s also possible to develop both simultaneously, particularly in the shoulder, where tendons and bursae sit close together and a single repetitive injury can inflame both structures.
How Arthritis, Rheumatic & Bone Disease Associates Tells the Difference
Many tendinitis and bursitis cases can be diagnosed clinically, but when the diagnosis is uncertain or symptoms aren’t resolving as expected, imaging becomes especially important. Arthritis, Rheumatic & Bone Disease Associates operates an in-office diagnostic ultrasound center at multiple locations. Musculoskeletal ultrasounds provide real-time imaging of joints, soft tissue, and tendons without radiation, capturing fluid buildup, inflammation, and soft-tissue damage that a physical exam alone can’t detect.
When symptoms worsen over time or don’t respond to initial treatment, X-rays or MRI scans may also be recommended to rule out other structural causes. Throughout the process, we coordinate findings with your referring or primary care physician to maintain consistent care.
Your Tendinitis and Bursitis Treatment Options
Treatment depends on the underlying cause, the severity of inflammation, and your individual health profile. Our physicians build each plan around your specific diagnosis, lifestyle, and medical requirements rather than following a generic protocol.
For most patients, first-line treatment focuses on reducing stress on the affected area: activity modification, rest, ice or heat application, and NSAID therapy using anti-inflammatory medications such as aspirin or ibuprofen. When inflammation is more significant, cortisone injections can reduce it at the specific site. Our physicians administer therapeutic injections in-office, and when ultrasound guidance is appropriate, that real-time imaging capability is available within the same practice.
Physical therapy plays a central role in tendinitis recovery. Strengthening exercises reduce long-term stress on tendons, while stretching maintains joint and tendon flexibility and may lower the risk of recurrence. Ergonomic modifications and supportive devices can reduce strain during daily activities. Surgery is a last resort and is rarely required for either condition. Prevention follows the same principles: regular stretching to maintain flexibility, progressive strengthening to protect tendons and bursae, and attention to activity patterns that put repetitive stress on vulnerable structures.
Why Come to a Specialist for Tendinitis and Bursitis Care?
A general practitioner visit can rule out obvious problems, but musculoskeletal soft-tissue conditions often require a more precise evaluation. Arthritis, Rheumatic & Bone Disease Associates brings more than 50 years of rheumatology experience to that work, with a care infrastructure that few independent practices in New Jersey can match.
Full-spectrum care is available under one roof. Beyond diagnostic evaluation and therapeutic injections, we offer oral medication management, infusion therapy through our IDYLLIC Infusion Treatment Centers, and long-term monitoring. We also work with most major insurance plans and can help you find copay assistance options to make care more manageable.
