B12 Injections for New Jersey Patients
Fellowship-Trained Rheumatology Care for B12 Evaluation & Treatment
Fatigue, weakness, numbness, and similar symptoms can have many causes. We evaluate your symptoms, health history, laboratory findings, medications, and possible absorption concerns before determining whether vitamin B12 injections are appropriate.
Arthritis, Rheumatic & Bone Disease Associates has provided independent rheumatology care since 1974. Every physician is board-certified or board-eligible and has completed fellowship training in rheumatology. We welcome new patients, including those seeking second opinions. We build each care plan around your diagnosis, lifestyle, and medical needs.

Possible Signs & Causes of Vitamin B12 Deficiency
Vitamin B12 supports nerve function, healthy red blood cell formation, and DNA synthesis. A deficiency may cause fatigue, weakness, heart palpitations, anemia, numbness, or tingling. Neurological symptoms can also occur when anemia isn’t present.
Because these concerns overlap with many other medical conditions, symptoms alone can’t confirm a deficiency. Blood testing and clinical evaluation help distinguish low B12 from other possible causes. Seek prompt medical attention for new, severe, or worsening neurological symptoms.
Factors that can increase the likelihood of low vitamin B12 include:
- Pernicious anemia: This autoimmune condition interferes with the body’s ability to absorb vitamin B12.
- Malabsorption: Gastrointestinal disorders or previous digestive tract surgery can make it harder to absorb nutrients.
- Medication use: Prolonged use of metformin or acid-suppressing medication may affect vitamin B12 levels.
- Dietary intake: People who eat little or no animal-derived food may not obtain enough vitamin B12 through their diet.
Identifying why a deficiency developed is an important part of choosing treatment. A patient with inadequate dietary intake may need a different approach from someone whose digestive system can’t absorb B12 effectively.
How We Determine Whether Injections Are Appropriate
We begin by reviewing your symptoms, medical history, current medications, previous laboratory results, and relevant diagnoses. Serum or plasma testing can assess vitamin B12 status. If an initial result is borderline or doesn’t fully explain your symptoms, additional markers may help clarify the findings. Methylmalonic acid and homocysteine are biochemical markers that may provide additional context, but their interpretation depends on your broader clinical picture.
The treatment plan depends on the likely cause of the deficiency, the severity of laboratory abnormalities, your symptoms, and your ability to absorb the vitamin. Oral supplementation may be suitable for some patients, while injectable treatment is often considered for certain cases of significant deficiency or malabsorption. We also determine whether an underlying condition requires further evaluation or treatment.
We explain your results, available options, and recommended next steps in clear terms. We encourage questions so you can understand why a particular approach has been suggested and how it fits into your broader care plan.
Coordination with Other Physicians
We share relevant records and findings with primary care providers and referring physicians. This coordination is particularly useful when fatigue, weakness, numbness, or tingling occurs alongside an inflammatory, autoimmune, bone, or musculoskeletal condition. Sharing records can also reduce duplicated testing and give each treating clinician a clearer view of your health.
What to Expect from Vitamin B12 Injection Care
When injectable B12 is clinically appropriate, the prescribed medication may be administered by intramuscular injection. The schedule is individualized according to your laboratory findings, symptoms, suspected cause of deficiency, absorption capacity, and response to treatment. We don’t use one standard schedule for every patient.
Before treatment, tell us about medication allergies, previous reactions, pregnancy, current medications, and relevant health conditions. During your visit, you can ask why the injection was recommended, what monitoring may be needed, and whether an alternative approach should be considered.
Follow-up may include reviewing changes in symptoms, repeating laboratory tests when indicated, or adjusting the treatment plan. The goal is to address a documented medical need while continuing to assess whether the chosen approach remains appropriate.
Insurance coverage and out-of-pocket costs depend on the plan and the medical reason for treatment. We participate with most major insurance plans and help identify available copay assistance options, but patients should confirm their individual benefits before receiving care.
B12 Evaluation Within Comprehensive Rheumatology Care
Vitamin B12 concerns don’t always occur in isolation. Our physicians focus on arthritis, osteoporosis, inflammatory and autoimmune diseases, and musculoskeletal conditions. This background allows us to consider B12 findings alongside other diagnoses, symptoms, medications, and long-term treatment needs.
Within our practice, patients can access diagnostic blood panels, imaging, therapeutic injections, medication management, infusion therapy, and ongoing monitoring. These services support coordinated, individualized care rather than presenting B12 injections as a general wellness shortcut or a treatment for every rheumatic condition.
Our history of medically supervised in-office treatment includes completing our first biologic infusion in 2001 and developing seven infusion centers across New Jersey. We also offer diagnostic ultrasound interpreted by physicians with rheumatology training. Patients can receive care at seven offices serving communities across New Jersey and the surrounding region.
Discuss Your Symptoms & the Right Next Step
An appointment provides an opportunity to review symptoms, laboratory results, absorption concerns, or a previous diagnosis of vitamin B12 deficiency. Depending on the clinical findings, the appropriate next step may be further evaluation, blood testing, oral supplementation, injection treatment, or coordination with another treating physician.
Bring any available laboratory reports, a current medication list, and notes about your symptoms or questions. New patients and those seeking a second opinion can use our online form to Request an appointment.
